Flying from Lismore: Ballina, Gold Coast or Brisbane?

Lismore doesn't have a commercial passenger airport of its own — so every trip starts with a choice between three gateways.

Here's how they compare, from the drivers who run these transfers weekly.

Ballina Byron Gateway (BNK) — the local choice

Roughly 30 to 40 minutes from Lismore, BNK is the Northern Rivers' own airport, with direct flights to Sydney, Melbourne and other east-coast ports. For most domestic trips it's the obvious pick: shortest transfer, smallest queues, easiest pickup on return.

A pre-booked WhiBlu transfer makes it door-to-terminal with a fixed fare — details on our airport transfers page.

Gold Coast Airport (OOL) — more routes, longer run

Around two hours north, Gold Coast Airport opens up far more destinations, including international routes and frequent budget-carrier services.

The transfer is a genuine road trip, so weigh the cheaper airfare against the longer ride — for families, one 6-seater transfer often still beats four sets of Ballina airfares when the fare gap is big.

Brisbane Airport (BNE) — the full menu

Two and a half hours or more each way, but with the state's biggest network, most international options and the most flight-time flexibility. Best reserved for international departures or when schedules simply don't line up closer to home.

Pre-booking the transfer is essential at this distance — and an early-morning international check-in is exactly why our bookings run 24/7.

The comparison at a glance

  • Shortest door-to-door: Ballina, comfortably — about 35 km.
  • Most flight choice: Brisbane (about 204 km), then Gold Coast (about 96 km).
  • Best value overall: usually Ballina once transfer time and parking are counted — check the live fare in the app and compare.

Choosing by the kind of trip

Rather than picking an airport in the abstract, match it to the trip you are actually taking:

  • Domestic east-coast trip, a few days — Ballina, almost always. The shorter transfer outweighs a modest fare difference.
  • International departure — Brisbane. Long-haul check-in windows and the international network make the drive worth it.
  • Budget carrier or an unusual route — Gold Coast is often the only place the flight exists.
  • Family of four or more — do the sum. One 6-seater transfer north can be cheaper than four higher airfares out of Ballina.
  • Early-morning departure — the further the airport, the earlier the pickup. From Brisbane-bound trips that can mean a start before 3am, which is exactly why bookings run 24/7.

Planning the transfer time

Work backwards from check-in, not from the departure time. For each gateway we allow for the drive, a traffic buffer and the walk from kerb to counter — you tell us the check-in time and we set the pickup.

  • Ballina — the shortest run and the smallest queues; the buffer is mostly for the Bruxner Highway.
  • Gold Coast — around two hours of driving, plus the M1 which does not always behave.
  • Brisbane — two and a half hours or more, and the one where an overnight departure genuinely needs planning.

For all three, book the return pickup for when you expect to be out of the terminal. We do not track flights, so amend the booking yourself if your arrival changes.

Whichever airport — skip the parking maths

Long-stay parking fees at any of the three add up fast on a week-plus trip, and none of them are fun with luggage in the rain. A pre-booked return transfer fixes the cost and the stress in one booking.
