Things to Do in Lismore: A Local's Honest Guide

This old river city is the beating heart of the Northern Rivers — a bit arty, a bit alternative, ringed by rainforest and villages that are worth the detour on their own. Here's what's actually worth your time.

Start in the CBD

The Lismore Regional Gallery is one of the best regional art spaces in the state, and it won't cost you a cent to wander through. Round the corner, the Quad and Lismore City Hall make up the cultural precinct, where you'll catch everything from touring shows to local exhibitions.

Keen on a decent coffee? Lismore punches well above its weight. Follow the locals at the morning peak and you won't go wrong — the cafe scene here is the real deal, not just a servo flat white on the run.

Markets and villages worth the drive

• Lismore Carboot Market — a proper Sunday institution at the Showgrounds. Get there early for the good gear.
• Nimbin — about 31 km and half an hour of winding hills, and unlike anywhere else in the country. Have a squiz at the museum, wander Cullen Street, soak up the vibe.
• The Channon Craft Market — second Sunday of the month, a Northern Rivers classic with a great feed and live music.
• Bangalow — heritage main street, tidy little shops and the famous fourth-Sunday markets.

Get amongst the rainforest

You don't have to go far to be in the green stuff. The Rotary Park rainforest walk is a pocket of remnant Big Scrub rainforest just minutes from town — a quick, shady loop that feels a world away. Got more time? Nightcap National Park and Minyon Falls are an easy drive, and the lookouts up there are cracking.

Lismore's also koala country. The locals will happily point you toward where they've been spotted lately — keep your eyes up.

What's Lismore famous for?

Two things, mainly: its creative, community-minded streak, and its resilience. This is a town that's copped some serious floods and keeps getting back up, and that spirit shows in the murals, the markets and the way everyone rallies.

The Lismore Lantern Parade each winter — a river of glowing lanterns through the CBD — is the biggest night on the local calendar and proof of exactly that.

Grab a feed and stay out

Lismore's pubs and small venues carry the region's live-music tradition, so there's usually something on of a weekend. Check what's happening at City Hall before you rock up.

For a proper morning out, it's worth the short run up the plateau to HOME Alstonville — a bakery and cafe in the old shopfront at 71 Main Street, and one of the best-loved in the Northern Rivers. Pastries, cakes and a solid brekkie, and it fills up with locals of a weekend. About 21 km from Lismore, so it pairs nicely with a drive out to Alstonville and the plateau villages.
