Brisbane to Byron Bay: Every Way to Make the Trip

It's about 165 kilometres south, just over the border in New South Wales, and there's more than one way to get there. Here's the honest lay of the land so you can pick what suits.

Option 1 — Drive it yourself

The classic road trip. Straight down the M1, and on a clear run you're looking at roughly two hours from the Brisbane CBD. Easy driving, mostly motorway.

The catches: the M1 can crawl badly on a Friday arvo and Sunday night when everyone's had the same idea, and once you're in Byron, parking is famously a nightmare in peak season. Great option if you want your own wheels for exploring; less great if the car's just going to sit there.

Option 2 — Fly into Ballina (the quick one)

If you're coming from further afield, you don't have to fly into Brisbane and do the long haul south — you can fly straight into Ballina Byron Gateway Airport instead. It's the closest airport to Byron, about 30 minutes away, and it's a tidy little terminal with none of the big-airport carry-on.

Option 4 — Train and transfer

There's no train straight into Byron, so this one's a mix-and-match — rail to a connecting point, then a coach or transfer.

Honestly, for most people it's more mucking about than it's worth compared to the coach or a flight.
